Thank you for this post and the series on surrealism. This style of art inspired me to begin drawing and painting as a teenager. I've always been drawn to work that blends technical proficiency and imaginative imagery.

Giselle, what a fantastic article, thank you!💕 I had never heard of Dorothea before this, no doubt she’s being overshadowed by Max Ernst for their association. I’m fascinated by the hotel installation with the stuffed figures. It’s haunting I also like the maternity painting- her ambivalence about motherhood is clear.

Glad to hear that you discovered a great new artist, and you're right her relationship with Max Ernst definitely made her appear at first glance as merely his muse, but when you start researching you find out there's so much more to it, and that is often overlooked.
